Paper Abstract:      There is an ‘invisible profession’ taking matters into its own hands. The people who build the web—developers, designers, information architects, writers, and many others—are bypassing formal training opportunities in favour of learning on their own, in their own time, where and when they want. Today’s time-starved web workers listen to podcasts while washing the dishes and blog while at the bus stop. However, rather than fuelling digital isolation, these practices contribute to the formation of a large-scale user-created learning resource that any formal institution would be pressured to rival in breadth, scope and timeliness. This paper presents important research in one key area of web professional’s learning—accessibility. It introduces a marginalised group of web users—intellectually disabled users—and highlights the challenges web professionals face when trying to be accessible for this group. Then it presents results from the Inclusive New Media Design project, emphasising the important role mobility and content creation play in web professionals’ learning strategies.
